Ministry of Works is as old as Kano State, but has adopted different names over the years. It is presently called Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport. The main objective of the Ministry is to plan, design, construct supervise, maintain and renovate all Government properties including buildings, roads and other related structure. It has a number of parastatals and five Directorates. The five Directorates are Administration and General Services, Building and Estate, Engineering Services, Road Traffic and Planning, Research and Statistics. The parastatals are Kano State Transport Authority KASTA, Fire Service Department, State Housing Corporation, Dala Building Society and NECCO.

The main objective of KASTA is to provide effective, efficient and affordable commuter bus services to the teeming population of Kano State and beyond. A Managing Director is the head of this organization.

The Authority provides efficient, effective and affordable Inter-state bus service, Intra state, City service, Charter service and special bus service for schools, ceremonials etc.

The objective of the Department is to ensure the safety of lives and properties of the members of Public in Kano State against fire outbreaks. It has a Director as its Chief Executive and two Departments - Operations and Admin and General Services.

The department's function is to see to extinction of fire in the state, public enlightenment on fire out breaks and rescue operations on fire outbreaks and during floods.

The objective of the Corporation is to provide and or increase dwelling houses for residents of Kano State. It has a Board of Directors with a Managing Director as Chief Executive Officer. There are two Directorates - Operations and Admin and General Services.

Its function is essentially to provide and increase dwelling houses, preparation of schemes to provide additional houses, undertake management of Government Housing Estates and provision of roads, drainages and other basic works in Government Housing Estates.

The objective of Dala Building Society is to enhance the housing needs of workers and the general public by acting as a primary Mortgage Bank between the beneficiaries and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. The Managing Director is the Chief Executive with four Departments working under him. They are Operations, Legal and Administration, Mortgage and Finance and Accounts. Essentially Dala Building Society processes National Housing Fund Loan for workers to construct, renovate or purchase houses. It also undertakes other banking services.

This is a limited liability joint venture between Kano State and Energoproject Holdings a Yugoslavian based company on 60:40 share equity. The objective is to carry on the business of Building and Civil Engineering in order to generate income for the owners and provide technical know how for Nigerians. It has a Managing Director and two Executive Directors. The Managing Director is a Yugoslavian as per the terms of the joint venture. Recently it functions are limited to office block building, construction of bridges and convocation square in BUK.
