MINISTRY OF JUSTICE
The ministry of Justice is the ministry charged with the responsibility of providing legal services to the State Government. It has five departments namely, Public Prosecutions, Civil Litigation, Legal Drafting, Citizens' Rights and Administration and General Services, each of which is headed by a Director.Specifically, the ministry carries out the following functions:
- Prosecution of Criminal cases
- Handling Civil litigations
- Drafting of Bills, Legal Instruments and Agreements
- Offering of Legal Advice to Government ministries, parastatals and Local Government Councils in the state.
The following parastatals are under the ministry:
LAW REFORM COMMISSION
Kano state Law Reform Commission was established in pursuance of the State Law Reform Edit, 1991 as amended.The Commission takes and keeps under review all laws of the state with a view to having their systematic and progressive development and reform in consonance with the prevailing norms of the people of Kano State.
KANO STATE RENT TRIBUNAL
The Rent Tribunal is also a creation of statute to handle cases relating to recovery of residential premises and/or rent therefore. The Rent Tribunal is overseen by the department of Civil Litigation of the ministry of Justice, which is headed by a Director.
The Tribunal sits in divisions with each division presided over by a chairman. There is a central Registry for receiving cases and complaints from where such cases are assigned to the divisions. The chairmen of the divisions are normally state counsel.
